Look-alike warning
Could be mistaken for Russelia equisetiformis (PlotAndPetal's separate entry): both species share the common name "firecracker plant.". To tell them apart: Cuphea ignea is a small mounding woody shrub with tubular red-orange flowers tipped white and black, like a lit cigar. Russelia equisetiformis has arching, rush-like leafless stems and small plain red tubular flowers.. Both go by "firecracker plant": check the growth habit (mounding shrub vs. arching rush-like stems) before assuming which one you have.
