Toxic to pets
Toxic to pets

ASPCA lists tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) as toxic to dogs, cats and horses; the toxic principle is nicotine; signs listed include hyperexcitability then depression, vomiting, incoordination and paralysis, and death is possible. The ASPCA page is for N. glauca; the toxic verdict is carried across ornamental tobaccos as a cautious whole-genus call.

PlotAndPetal cannot tell you whether a plant you found can be eaten. Only someone who can see the plant can identify it.

Look-alike warning
Could be mistaken for Other plants with a similar name or look. To tell them apart: Match on the scientific name, Nicotiana (species not identified), not on the common name.. 'Tobacco plant' is also the common name for the nicotine-bearing Nicotiana glauca (tree tobacco) that ASPCA lists as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. The RHS page names no species, so treat every ornamental tobacco plant as toxic to pets.
