Pet & Human Safety
People: Not researchedPets: Not on the ASPCA lists as we read them
ASPCA's 'Hibiscus' and 'Rose of China' pages both cover Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon), a different, cold-hardy species: not Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (tropical/Chinese hibiscus), which this entry is for. The 'Rose of China' name is the most dangerous part of this naming trap, since it sounds like it should mean the tropical Chinese hibiscus and does not. Because this is a naming-trap situation, this entry has no verdict rather than borrowing Rose of Sharon's non-toxic verdict. Do not assume toxicity either way for H. rosa-sinensis from any of ASPCA's three hibiscus-named pages.
