Common questions

Is the app available now?

Not yet. The iPhone app is in testing and comes first, with Android after; the browser version comes after the phone apps. See Features for what the app does.

Does the app sell or share my data?

No. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.

I found this site by typing plotandpetal.com — is that you?

No — see this note.

Which platforms will it run on?

Native iOS and Android apps. iOS is furthest along; Android is in progress behind it, and the browser version comes after the phone apps.

Can the app tell me what is wrong with my plant from a photo?

No. A photo cannot tell look-alike problems apart, such as a nutrient shortage, a disease and too little or too much water, and a wrong answer sends you to the wrong treatment. So the app does not offer a photo diagnosis. For a sick plant, start with your state's extension service. The Plant safety & sources page lists where our information comes from.

Can I identify a plant from a photo?

Use your phone's own camera search: Apple's lookup on iPhone, or Google Lens on Android. It only guesses, so check the guess against the plant's field guide before you rely on it.

Where do the care tips come from?

From your state's extension service and other public sources. Each one is listed. See Plant safety & sources.

Can my child use PlotAndPetal?

Yes, with you. It is a general gardening app, not one made for children. It has no accounts and collects nothing from whoever is using it. Please sit with younger children, especially on the plant-safety pages, and keep the poison-control number handy. The launch email list is for adults.
